This recipe for Baked BBQ Chicken Drumsticks offers a crispy, flavorful twist on classic baked chicken. Coated in a seasoned breadcrumb crust and basted in tangy BBQ sauce, these drumsticks are oven-baked to juicy perfection, making them a perfect family dinner or game-day snack.

Ingredients

Chicken Preparation

  • 2.5 pounds chicken drumsticks (about 8 drumsticks)

Coating

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons milk (any variety)
  • 1 cup Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs

Sauce

  • ¾ cup BBQ sauce (divided)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and generously spray a large baking dish or sheet pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Dry Drumsticks: Pat each chicken drumstick dry thoroughly using paper towels to ensure the coating adheres properly.
  3. Set Up Breading Stations: Prepare three shallow bowls: one with flour, another with beaten eggs combined with milk, and the last with Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs.
  4. Coat the Drumsticks: Take one drumstick at a time and coat it first in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it completely in the egg and milk mixture. Finally, press the drumstick into the breadcrumbs until well coated. Place each breaded drumstick on the prepared baking pan, arranging them alternatingly to maximize space.
  5. Bake Initial Phase: Bake the coated drumsticks in the preheated oven for 40 minutes until they start to crisp and cook through.
  6. First Baste and Bake: Remove the pan from the oven and baste the drumsticks with ½ cup of BBQ sauce. Return them to the oven and bake for another 10 minutes to set the sauce and enhance flavor.
  7. Flip, Baste, and Final Bake: Carefully flip each drumstick to baste the other side with the remaining ¼ cup BBQ sauce. Bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the thickest drumstick reaches 165°F (74°C), ensuring full doneness.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, place the drumsticks on a wire rack set inside the baking pan to allow air circulation.
  • Use an instant-read thermometer to check doneness accurately.
  • If you prefer less coating, adjust breadcrumb quantity accordingly.
  • Feel free to substitute Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs with plain breadcrumbs and add your own seasoning.
  • Leftover drumsticks reheat well in the oven to retain crispness.
