This Baked Halibut with Lemon Garlic Butter is a simple yet elegant seafood dish featuring tender halibut fillets baked to perfection with a flavorful lemon garlic butter sauce. It's perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a special occasion, offering a delightful balance of fresh herbs and zesty lemon.

Ingredients

Seafood

  • 2 halibut fillets (about 5 oz each)

Butter Sauce

  • ½ cup salted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
  • 2 Tbsp chopped parsley
  • 2 Tbsp chopped chives
  • ¾ tsp fine sea salt
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

Garnish

  • 1 lemon, sliced into 2 slices and 4 wedges

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400ºF to ensure it's ready for baking the halibut fillets evenly.
  2. Prepare Fillets: Pat the halibut fillets dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture and debone if necessary for a clean eating experience.
  3. Make Garlic Butter: Melt the salted butter in a small saucepan or microwave. Stir in the minced garlic, chopped parsley, chopped chives, sea salt, and black pepper until the salt fully dissolves and the mixture is well combined.
  4. Assemble for Baking: Lightly grease a baking dish to prevent sticking. Place the halibut fillets in the dish and spoon half of the prepared garlic butter mixture evenly over the tops of the fillets. Place one lemon slice on each fillet to infuse bright, citrus flavor during baking.
  5. Bake: Bake the halibut fillets on the middle rack of the oven for 12 to 16 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillets. The fish should be opaque and flake easily with a fork when done.
  6. Serve: Remove the halibut from the oven and serve immediately. Drizzle the remaining garlic butter over the fillets and garnish with the lemon wedges for added freshness and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure the halibut fillets are dry before baking to help the butter and seasonings adhere better.
  • The baking time varies depending on the thickness of the fish; thicker fillets may need a couple of extra minutes.
  • Use fresh herbs for the best flavor, but dried can be substituted if necessary (use about one-third of the fresh quantity).
  • Leftover garlic butter can be saved and used as a flavorful sauce for steamed vegetables or crusty bread.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed asparagus, roasted potatoes, or a light salad for a complete meal.
