Ingredients

Meat Mixture

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 3-5 tablespoons taco seasoning (adjust to taste)
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce

Taco Shells and Toppings

  • 12 taco shells (hard or fajita size soft shells)
  • 2 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend (or cheddar cheese)
  • Lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapeno, salsa, etc., for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400º Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the taco shells.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a skillet over medium heat on the stovetop, brown and crumble the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain off as much fat as possible to avoid soggy tacos.
  3. Season Meat: Add the taco seasoning and tomato sauce to the browned beef. Stir well and let it heat through for about 5 minutes over medium-low heat to meld the flavors.
  4. Prepare Taco Shells: Place the taco shells upright in baking pans or a baking dish lined with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  5. Initial Bake: Bake the empty taco shells for 5 minutes to slightly crisp them before filling.
  6. Fill and Top: Spoon the seasoned meat evenly into each taco shell and sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
  7. Final Bake: Return the filled tacos to the oven and bake for 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted and everything is heated through. Rotate pans if needed to promote even browning and watch closely to prevent burning.
  8. Add Toppings and Serve: Top the baked tacos with your favorite fresh toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapeno, and salsa. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Drain the ground beef thoroughly after browning to prevent soggy taco shells.
  • Adjust the amount of taco seasoning according to your preferred spice level.
  • Using parchment paper in the baking dish makes cleanup easier.
  • Keep an eye on the tacos during the final bake to avoid over-browning.
  • Feel free to customize toppings to suit your taste preferences.
