These crispy and flavorful Cheese Rangoons paired with a zesty Sweet Ginger Chili Sauce make for a perfect appetizer or snack. The creamy cream cheese filling is accented with green onions, garlic, and tamari, wrapped in wonton wrappers and baked to golden perfection. The vibrant dipping sauce balances honey sweetness with tangy lime and spicy chili, enhanced with fresh ginger and herbs.

Ingredients

For the Cheese Rangoons

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 20 square wonton wrappers
  • Toasted sesame oil, for brushing

For the Sweet Ginger Chili Sauce

  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1-2 tablespoons chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons lime zest
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 2 tablespoons chopped Thai basil or cilantro

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400° F (200° C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the cream cheese, finely chopped green onions, garlic powder, and tamari or soy sauce. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated, creating a smooth, flavorful filling.
  3. Assemble the Rangoons: Place a rounded teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture onto the center of each wonton wrapper. Lightly brush water around the edges of the wrapper to help seal them. Bring the corners of each wrapper together in the center and pinch tightly to seal the filling inside. Arrange the assembled Rangoons on the lined baking sheet.
  4. Brush with Sesame Oil: Lightly brush the tops of each Rangoon with toasted sesame oil to enhance browning and add a subtle nutty flavor.
  5. Bake: Bake the Rangoons in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until they are crispy and golden brown. If the tops begin to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil to prevent burning while allowing the insides to finish baking.
  6. Make the Sweet Ginger Chili Sauce: While the Rangoons bake, combine honey, ketchup, chili sauce, lime zest, lime juice, rice vinegar, tamari or soy sauce, grated ginger, grated garlic, and chopped Thai basil or cilantro in a bowl. Whisk well until all ingredients are thoroughly blended and the sauce is smooth.
  7. Serve: Once baked, remove the Rangoons from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve them topped with extra green onions if desired and alongside the Sweet Ginger Chili Sauce for dipping. Enjoy this crispy, creamy appetizer hot for best flavor and texture.
