Classic Green Bean Casserole is a comforting and creamy side dish featuring tender green beans combined with a savory cream of mushroom soup mixture, topped with crispy fried onions for a delightful crunch. Perfect for holiday dinners or any family meal.

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 4 cups frozen cut green beans (can substitute canned or fresh beans)

Soup Mixture

  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt (adjust to taste)

Toppings

  • 1½ cups crispy fried onions (divided)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Green Beans: Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil. Add the frozen green beans and cook until tender-crisp, about 2 to 3 minutes. Drain well.
  3. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cooked green beans with the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, seasoned salt, and 1 cup of crispy fried onions. Stir well to combine.
  4. Assemble Casserole: Transfer the mixture into a 2-quart baking dish, spreading evenly.
  5. Bake First Phase: Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly around the edges.
  6. Add Topping: Remove the casserole from the oven, stir gently, then sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of crispy fried onions evenly on top.
  7. Bake Final Phase: Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving as a delicious side dish.

Notes

  • For fresh green beans, trim and blanch in boiling water for about 5 minutes until crisp-tender before using.
  • Canned green beans can be used but reduce boiling time accordingly and drain well.
  • For extra flavor, shredded cheddar cheese can be added to the soup mixture before baking.
  • This recipe serves 8 as a side dish.
