This creamy mashed potatoes recipe combines tender russet or Yukon Gold potatoes with butter, cream cheese, half-and-half, and heavy cream for a rich and velvety texture. Seasoned with Lawry's Seasoned Salt, black pepper, and kosher salt, these mashed potatoes are perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal. The potatoes are boiled until soft, mashed with warm dairy for smoothness, and finished by warming in the oven with pats of butter on top to enhance flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 5 lb. russet or Yukon Gold potatoes

Dairy & Fats

  • 3/4 cup butter, plus more for topping
  • 1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Seasonings

  • 1/2 to 1 tsp. Lawry's Seasoned Salt
  • 2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt, plus more to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes: Peel and cut the potatoes into evenly sized pieces. Place them in a large pot of simmering water, bring to a boil, and cook for 30 to 35 minutes until a fork can easily pierce the potatoes without resistance, meaning they are tender but not falling apart.
  2. Drain and mash: Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly using a large colander. Return the drained potatoes to the empty pot and place it on the stove over low heat. Begin mashing the potatoes while allowing steam to escape, which helps remove excess moisture for a fluffier texture.
  3. Add dairy and seasonings: Turn off the heat and add the butter, softened cream cheese, half-and-half, and heavy cream to the potatoes. Mash thoroughly to combine everything until smooth. Then, season with Lawry's Seasoned Salt, black pepper, and kosher salt. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed for the perfect flavor balance.
  4. Warm in the oven: Transfer the mashed potatoes to a medium-sized baking dish. Dot the top with a few pats of butter. Place the dish in a preheated oven at 350ºF and heat until the butter is melted and the mashed potatoes are warmed through, about 15-20 minutes.

Notes

  • Use russet potatoes for a fluffier texture or Yukon Gold for a creamier consistency.
  • Ensure potatoes are drained well to avoid watery mashed potatoes.
  • For extra richness, increase the amount of butter or cream cheese slightly.
  • Adjust seasoning to your taste, especially the amount of seasoned salt and black pepper.
  • If preferred, mashed potatoes can be served immediately after mashing without the oven warming step.
