Classic Southern hushpuppies are crispy, golden-fried cornmeal balls that make the perfect savory side dish. Made with a simple batter of cornmeal, flour, spices, milk, and egg, these bite-sized treats are deep-fried until crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Ideal for serving alongside seafood, barbecue, or any Southern-inspired meal.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ½ Cups Yellow Cornmeal
  • ½ Cup All Purpose Flour
  • ¼ Cup White Sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Salt
  • ½ Teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • ¼ Teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ⅛ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Whole Milk
  • 1 Egg

For Frying

  • Vegetable Oil (about 2 inches in depth for deep frying)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, thoroughly combine the yellow cornmeal, white sugar, all purpose flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper to evenly distribute all the seasonings.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients: Stir in the whole milk and egg into the dry mixture, mixing gently until just combined. Avoid over mixing the batter to keep the hushpuppies tender.
  3. Heat Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep pot or heavy-bottomed pan to about 2 inches deep and heat it to 375°F (190°C) for frying.
  4. Fry Hushpuppies: Using a spoon or small scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, a few at a time to prevent overcrowding. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until each hushpuppy is golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  5. Drain and Serve: Remove the hushpuppies with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve warm as a delicious side dish.

Notes

  • Maintain the oil temperature at 375°F to ensure hushpuppies cook evenly and do not absorb excess oil.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the texture light and tender inside.
  • You can add finely chopped onions or jalapeños to the batter for extra flavor.
  • Use a deep pot to prevent oil splatter and ensure proper deep frying.
  • Serve fresh and warm for the best taste and texture.
