Ingredients

Chocolate Cake Layer

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients as per box instructions)
  • 12.8 oz hot fudge sauce

Pudding Layers

  • 3.4 oz chocolate instant pudding mix (for first pudding layer)
  • 1 3/4 cups milk (for first pudding layer)
  • 3.4 oz chocolate instant pudding mix (for topping pudding layer)
  • 1 3/4 cups milk (for topping pudding layer)

Topping

  • 8 oz Cool Whip, thawed
  • 30 Oreos, crushed (divided into 3/4 and 1/4 portions)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake: Preheat your oven as directed on your cake mix box. Prepare the chocolate cake batter according to the box instructions, then pour it into your baking pan and bake as specified.
  2. Cool and Poke Holes: Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes. Use the end of a spoon to poke holes evenly all over the cake to help the hot fudge soak in.
  3. Apply Hot Fudge: Warm the hot fudge sauce in the microwave until it’s thin enough to pour easily. Evenly pour the warm fudge over the cake, letting it seep deep into the poked holes. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  4. Make First Pudding Layer: In a medium bowl, whisk together the first 3.4 oz package of chocolate instant pudding mix with 1 3/4 cups of milk until it begins to set. Pour this pudding evenly over the cooled, fudge-soaked cake layer.
  5. Chill Cake: Place the cake in the refrigerator and chill for about 20 minutes to allow the pudding layer to firm up.
  6. Prepare Topping Pudding: In another bowl, mix the second package of chocolate instant pudding mix with 1 3/4 cups milk. Refrigerate for about 10 minutes until this pudding sets fully.
  7. Combine Topping Mixture: Remove the set pudding from the refrigerator and gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip until smooth and creamy.
  8. Layer Topping: Stir most of the crushed Oreos (about 3/4) into the creamy pudding and Cool Whip mixture, then spread this evenly over the chilled pudding layer on the cake.
  9. Finish and Serve: Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos over the top of the cake. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to enjoy your decadent Dirt Cake.

Notes

  • Make sure the hot fudge is warmed just enough to drizzle, not too hot to avoid melting the cake too much.
  • For easier slicing, chill the cake for at least 1 hour after the topping is applied.
  • Use a sharp knife wiped clean between cuts to get clean slices without smudging the layers.
  • If preferred, substitute Cool Whip with homemade whipped cream for a fresher dairy option.
