This Easy Salisbury Steak Recipe features tender beef patties seasoned with classic flavors and smothered in a savory brown gravy. Ready in just 20 minutes, it’s a comforting and satisfying meal perfect for family dinners, served best over creamy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

For the Gravy

  • 2 packets Brown Gravy Mix
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking patties)
  • Optional: additional 1/4 cup water (to thin gravy if needed)

Instructions

  1. Mix Patty Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Use clean hands to thoroughly mix all ingredients until well combined.
  2. Form Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and then flatten to form patties of even thickness.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook them until the beef is no longer pink inside, about 4-5 minutes per side. Once cooked through, reduce the heat to low.
  4. Prepare Gravy: In a separate bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and 2 cups hot water until smooth and combined.
  5. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the cooked patties in the skillet. Allow it to come to a gentle simmer. If the gravy is too thick, stir in an additional 1/4 cup of water to thin it to your desired consistency.
  6. Serve: Let the patties simmer in the gravy for a few more minutes to absorb the flavors. Serve warm, ideally over mashed potatoes or rice for a classic comfort meal.

Notes

  • You can substitute bread crumbs with gluten-free crumbs if needed.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, adding salt and pepper if desired since the gravy mix contains salt.
  • For a richer flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the gravy while simmering.
  • Leftover Salisbury steak can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables or a fresh salad for a balanced meal.
