This Healthy Cream Cheese Frosting offers a deliciously creamy and fluffy topping made with light cream cheese, Greek yogurt, and real maple syrup. It’s a healthier alternative to traditional frosting, providing a rich flavor with less sugar and fat, perfect for cakes, cupcakes, or cinnamon rolls.

Ingredients

Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients

  • 8 oz block cream cheese (Neufchâtel light, low-fat or regular, softened to room temperature)
  • ¼ cup vanilla Greek yogurt (such as Siggi's or Chobani)
  • ¼ cup real maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons almond or oat milk (optional, for a thinner frosting)

Instructions

  1. Beat the Cream Cheese: Place the softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer on medium speed, beat for about 30 seconds until the cream cheese is smooth and free of lumps.
  2. Add Remaining Ingredients: Add the vanilla Greek yogurt, real maple syrup, and pure vanilla extract to the cream cheese. Continue beating on medium speed for 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed, until the mixture becomes thick and fluffy.
  3. Adjust Consistency: If you prefer a thinner frosting suitable for drizzling, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of almond or oat milk. Beat again for about 15 seconds to incorporate the milk and reach your desired consistency.
  4. Frost Your Dessert: Spread the frosting evenly over a fully cooled cake, cupcakes, or cinnamon rolls. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Notes

  • Use Neufchâtel cream cheese for a lighter version with less fat.
  • Maple syrup or honey adds natural sweetness without refined sugar.
  • Greek yogurt contributes creaminess and a slight tang while keeping frosting healthy.
  • Adjust almond or oat milk amount gradually to avoid making frosting too runny.
  • Always frost cakes or cupcakes only when fully cooled to prevent melting.
  • Refrigerate leftover frosting and bring to room temperature before use for best texture.
