This Homemade Miso Soup with Tofu is a simple, comforting Japanese classic made from a flavorful miso broth enriched with soft tofu, green onions, and garnished with nori seaweed and toasted sesame seeds. Ready in just 10 minutes, it's a nutritious and warming soup perfect as a starter or light meal.

Ingredients

Broth Base

  • 4 cups boiling water
  • ¼ cup miso paste (or 4-inch piece kombu for a traditional version)

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup soft tofu, diced
  • ¼ cup green onion, finely chopped

Garnishes

  • Dried nori seaweed, thinly sliced
  • ½ tablespoon toasted white sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the broth: In a medium pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. For a richer, traditional flavor, you can substitute water with vegetable broth or make kombu dashi by simmering a 4-inch piece of kombu in water over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, then removing the kombu before proceeding.
  2. Dissolve the miso paste: Add ¼ cup miso paste to the hot water and whisk gently until fully dissolved. To prevent clumping, you may place the miso in a ladle and stir gently while lowering it into the pot, ensuring smooth and even mixing.
  3. Add tofu and green onions: Stir in the diced soft tofu and finely chopped green onions. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 2 to 3 minutes, heating the ingredients through without bringing the soup to a boil.
  4. Serve with garnishes: Ladle the miso soup into serving bowls and top with thinly sliced dried nori seaweed and a sprinkle of toasted white sesame seeds. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • Do not boil the soup after adding miso paste to preserve its delicate flavor and probiotics.
  • For a gluten-free version, ensure the miso paste is gluten-free.
  • Soft tofu is preferred to maintain the soup’s smooth texture.
  • Kombu dashi provides a more authentic and umami-rich broth but can be omitted for a quicker preparation.
  • Use freshly chopped green onions to add brightness to the soup.
