This Maple Apple Skillet Cake is a moist, flavorful dessert featuring tender apples infused with warm spices and sweet maple syrup. Baked in a skillet or cake pan, it offers a rustic presentation with a beautifully caramelized top. Perfect for cozy fall gatherings or a comforting treat any day, this cake combines the sweetness of brown sugar and maple syrup with the aromatic notes of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Ingredients

Apples and Topping

  • 3-4 medium sized apples, sliced (If your apples are large, 2 will cover the batter)
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Cake Batter

  • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ⅔ cup milk
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Skillet: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Butter an 8-inch iron skillet or an 8-inch cake pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Apples: Core and slice the apples thinly. Place them in a medium-sized bowl.
  3. Mix Apple Topping: To the sliced apples, add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and 3 tablespoons maple syrup. Stir gently to combine so the apples are evenly coated.
  4. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a separate medium-sized bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir to mix evenly.
  5. Combine Wet Ingredients: Warm the milk by microwaving it on high for about 40 seconds. In a small bowl, whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, beaten egg, and 3 tablespoons maple syrup.
  6. Make Cake Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with dry ingredients. Stir gently until combined, without overmixing, then pour the batter into the prepared skillet or pan.
  7. Arrange Apples: Lay the sliced apples on top of the batter in a circular pattern. If you have extra apples, freeze them for another use later.
  8. Add Extra Syrup: If there is leftover syrup in the bowl from the apples, spoon 1 to 2 tablespoons over the apples on top to enhance sweetness and moisture.
  9. Bake the Cake: Place the skillet or pan into the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool slightly, then slice and serve warm directly from the skillet or pan.
  11. Store Leftovers: Store any leftover cake in a covered airtight container to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Use thinly sliced apples for even cooking and better texture.
  • If apples overflow the skillet, freeze extras for another use.
  • Ensure the milk is warm but not hot when mixing with wet ingredients to avoid cooking the egg prematurely.
  • Butter the skillet well to prevent the cake from sticking and to create a nice crust.
  • Check doneness with a toothpick or cake tester before removing from the oven.
  • Leftovers will keep well at room temperature for a day or refrigerated for up to 3 days.
