This Old Fashioned Easy Apple Crisp is a classic dessert featuring tender, spiced apples topped with a crunchy oat and brown sugar crumb topping. Baked until golden brown and bubbly, it's perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a cozy, comforting treat.

Ingredients

For the Spiced Apples

  • 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used, can also be sliced)
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice

For the Crisp Topping

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but texture will vary)
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish with butter or spray it with non-stick cooking spray, then set it aside.
  2. Make Spiced Apples: In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled and chopped apples with granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Stir well to evenly coat the apples, then transfer this mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Make Topping: In a separate bowl, combine light brown sugar, old fashioned oats, all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a pinch of kosher salt. Add the cold, diced butter to the mixture.
  4. Cut in Butter: Using a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the oat mixture with a downward twisting motion until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs. You can also use two forks or your hands for this step if a pastry cutter is unavailable.
  5. Bake: Evenly spread and gently pat the crumb topping over the spiced apples in the baking dish. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  6. Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and serve warm. It pairs beautifully with vanilla bean ice cream or whipped cream for a delightful dessert experience.

Notes

  • You can substitute other apple varieties such as Granny Smith or Fuji for a different flavor and texture.
  • Quick oats can be used instead of old fashioned oats but may result in a softer topping.
  • If you prefer a sweeter topping, increase the brown sugar by up to 1/4 cup.
  • For added flavor, sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg or allspice into the apple mixture along with the cinnamon.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
