This Shamrock Shake recipe is a festive, creamy green milkshake perfect for celebrating St. Patrick's Day or any time you want a refreshing minty treat. Made with vanilla ice cream, milk, and vanilla extract, it's blended to a smooth consistency with chocolate chips for a hint of indulgence. Garnished with whipped cream, green sprinkles, and Lucky Charms marshmallows, this fun and colorful shake is a delightful treat to share.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4½ cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup 2% or whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Green liquid food coloring (to taste)
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips

Garnish

  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • Green sprinkles
  • ¼ cup marshmallows from Lucky Charms cereal (rainbows, shamrocks, horseshoes, and sometimes unicorns)

Instructions

  1. Blend the ingredients: Place the vanilla ice cream, milk, pure vanilla extract, green liquid food coloring, and chocolate chips into a blender.
  2. Process the mixture: Blend the ingredients together until the mixture is thick and smooth. Check the green color and blend in more food coloring if necessary to achieve a bright green hue.
  3. Pour into glasses: Divide the milkshake mixture evenly between two tall, chilled glasses.
  4. Add whipped cream: Top each milkshake with whipped cream, dividing the total amount between the glasses.
  5. Garnish the shakes: Sprinkle green sprinkles over the whipped cream and add several Lucky Charms marshmallows onto the tops of each milkshake.
  6. Serve immediately: Serve the milkshakes right away with long spoons and straws for easy enjoyment. Sláinte!
  7. Optional mint flavor: For mint-flavored green milkshakes, add a few drops of mint extract to the blender before blending. Start with a couple of drops, taste, and add more as desired. Alternatively, substitute mint chocolate chip ice cream for vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • You can adjust the green food coloring quantity to get your desired shade of green.
  • Using whole milk or 2% milk is recommended for balanced creaminess.
  • Mint extract is optional but adds a classic mint flavor if desired.
  • Substituting mint chocolate chip ice cream is a great shortcut for mint flavor.
  • Use chilled glasses to help keep the milkshake cold longer.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the optimal creamy texture.
