Ingredients

Soda Bread

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2/3 cups milk chocolate chunks or chips

Salted Honey Butter

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) to prepare for baking the soda bread.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom. Whisk these dry ingredients together to ensure even distribution of the baking soda and spices.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a smaller bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and lightly beaten egg until smooth.
  4. Form the Dough: With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour the buttermilk and egg mixture into the dry ingredients. Increase to medium speed and mix until the dough begins to come together. Toss the milk chocolate chunks with a tablespoon of flour to prevent sticking, then gently fold them into the dough.
  5. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently a few times, adding flour as needed if the dough is very sticky. Shape the dough into a round loaf about 8 inches wide.
  6. Score the Dough: Using a sharp knife, slice an X on the top of the loaf. This helps the bread bake evenly and allows steam to escape.
  7. Prepare for Baking: Place the loaf in a Dutch oven or on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Baking in a Dutch oven helps create a crispy crust, but a baking sheet also works well.
  8. Bake: Bake the bread for 45 to 55 minutes until it is golden brown on top and set inside. The loaf should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Cool: Remove from the oven and let the bread cool in the Dutch oven or on a wire rack. You can serve it warm or wait until completely cooled depending on preference.
  10. Prepare Salted Honey Butter: While the bread is baking or cooling, mix the unsalted butter, honey, and salt together until fully combined. Taste and adjust salt or honey levels. Optionally, sprinkle extra salt on top before serving.
  11. Serve: Slice the soda bread and spread the salted honey butter on warm or cooled slices. Enjoy as a sweet and savory treat at any time of day.

Notes

  • If you do not have buttermilk, you can substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 3/4 cups of milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk chocolate with a dairy-free alternative and use a plant-based butter for the honey butter.
  • The milk chocolate chunks can be swapped for dark chocolate or white chocolate based on preference.
  • Slicing an X on top of the dough not only looks traditional but helps the bread cook evenly by releasing steam.
  • Storing the bread wrapped in a clean kitchen towel inside a bread box or airtight container preserves freshness for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat slices in a toaster or oven for a freshly baked feel before serving with the honey butter.
