These Sweet Air Fryer Churro Bites are a delightful twist on the classic churro, made effortlessly in the air fryer for a crispy, golden-brown exterior and soft, pillowy interior. Coated in a cinnamon sugar blend, these bite-sized treats are perfect for a quick snack or dessert and are best enjoyed warm with your favorite dips like chocolate syrup or Nutella.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 1 cup plain flour (King Arthur all-purpose flour recommended)
  • 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt

Coating

  • 1 tbsp cinnamon powder (freshly ground preferred)
  • 1 cup white sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough base: In a pan, combine water, butter, salt, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat and gradually add in the flour, stirring continuously until the dough comes together smoothly. Turn off the heat and remove the pan from the stove.
  2. Mix in egg and vanilla: Transfer the hot dough into a large mixing bowl and let it cool for 4-5 minutes. Once slightly cooled, add in the egg and vanilla essence. Use an electric hand mixer to thoroughly combine until you achieve a smooth dough mixture.
  3. Preheat and prep air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Spray the air fryer basket with a neutral nonstick cooking spray such as coconut oil spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Pipe churro bites: Transfer the churro dough into a piping bag and carefully pipe bite-sized churros into the air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd them. Alternatively, you may drop spoonfuls of dough into the basket.
  5. Add butter and air fry: Lightly brush melted butter on top of the churros to help with browning and flavor. Cook them in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. You may need to work in batches depending on your air fryer size to ensure even cooking.
  6. Prepare coating and coat churros: In a shallow bowl, mix together the white sugar and cinnamon powder. Once churros are cooked, immediately transfer them into the cinnamon sugar mixture. Toss gently to coat evenly. If needed, brush additional melted butter or spray water/nonstick spray on the churros before rolling to help the coating adhere better.
  7. Serve warm: Enjoy your churro bites warm, ideally served with dips such as chocolate syrup, honey, or Nutella for added indulgence.

Notes

  • Ensure the dough is slightly cooled before adding the egg to prevent cooking it prematurely.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to allow proper air circulation and even cooking.
  • Freshly ground cinnamon provides a more vibrant flavor for the coating.
  • Work in batches if your air fryer is small to maintain texture and crispiness.
  • These churro bites are best served immediately while warm for optimal taste and texture.
